October 2026 · Ink challenge
31 October drawing prompts
October is the month everyone picks up a pen. If you want an Inktober-style challenge but prefer a fresh set of words — or you already drew the official list and want more — here are 31 original prompts, one per day, each with a small twist to push the idea further.
Ink, pencil, phone or tablet: the medium does not matter. What matters is drawing every day for 31 days and finishing the month with a stack of sketches you are proud of.
The 31-day prompt list
31 ideas
Days 1–7 · Warm up the ink
Tip · Keep week one small: single objects, bold silhouettes, 15 minutes max. You are building the habit, not the portfolio.
- Day 1 —Lantern — a light someone left on for you
- Day 2 —Moth — drawn to the wrong lamp
- Day 3 —Key — what does it open?
- Day 4 —Fog — show only half of the scene
- Day 5 —Nest — built from something unexpected
- Day 6 —Stitch — mend something broken
- Day 7 —Crunch — the loudest leaf of autumn
Days 8–14 · Creatures & small worlds
Tip · Mix textures: hatching for fur, stippling for stone, solid black for shadows. Contrast does the heavy lifting in ink.
- Day 8 —Raven — a collector of shiny things
- Day 9 —Shell — a home you carry
- Day 10 —Mushroom — a village under the caps
- Day 11 —Tangle — a web, a knot or a messy drawer
- Day 12 —Bones — of a creature that never existed
- Day 13 —Pond — what lives under the lily pads
- Day 14 —Thorn — something beautiful that bites back
Days 15–21 · Places & moods
Tip · Try one-point perspective for at least one of these. A strong horizon line makes even a rough sketch read as a place.
- Day 15 —Hollow — the inside of a tree
- Day 16 —Drift — something lost at sea
- Day 17 —Clock tower — at 3 a.m.
- Day 18 —Puddle — reflect a different world
- Day 19 —Map — of a place you invented
- Day 20 —Gate — and what waits behind it
- Day 21 —Ghost town — one window still lit
Days 22–28 · Stranger things
Tip · Week four is where people quit. Shrink the drawing instead of skipping it: a 5-minute sketch still counts.
- Day 22 —Ember — the last spark of a campfire
- Day 23 —Lurk — eyes in the dark, nothing else
- Day 24 —Knot — two things that should not be tied
- Day 25 —Static — a TV that shows the wrong channel
- Day 26 —Whisper — draw a secret without words
- Day 27 —Shadow puppet — the shadow is not the hand
- Day 28 —Spiral — fall into it
Days 29–31 · The grand finale
Tip · Go big for the last three: a full scene, a character you created this month, or a redraw of your day 1 to see the progress.
- Day 29 —Mirror — the reflection moves first
- Day 30 —Harvest — a feast for creatures, not people
- Day 31 —Masquerade — everyone from this month, in costume

Play Draw Now →Do the October challenge in the app
Prefer to be handed a surprise prompt every morning instead of following a list? The Midnight Gallery runs a daily drawing challenge all year — October is the perfect month to start.
1. One theme a day, at midnight
A new drawing theme drops in the app every night. No list to print, no planning: open it and draw.
2. One attempt, no undo
Like ink, the in-app canvas has no eraser and no retries. It is the fastest cure for perfectionism you will find.
3. Your streak counts the days
Draw 31 days in a row and your streak shows it. Miss one and it resets — the best motivation to keep going in week four.
4. A gallery of people doing the same
Your sketch joins the community gallery next to everyone else who drew the same theme, and the best ones win trophies.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official Inktober 2026 prompt list?
No. This is an independent list of 31 original October drawing prompts written by The Midnight Gallery. The official Inktober list is published by Inktober on inktober.com. You can use our list instead, alongside it, or as extra prompts once you are done.
Do I have to use ink for an October drawing challenge?
Not at all. The point of an October challenge is drawing every day. Pencil, markers, a phone or a tablet all work. Ink helps because it forces you to commit to each line — the same idea behind the no-undo canvas in The Midnight Gallery.
How long should each daily drawing take?
Plan for 15 to 30 minutes on most days. If you are short on time, a 5-minute sketch still counts — finishing all 31 days matters more than finishing every drawing.
What if I miss a day?
Draw two prompts the next day, or simply pick up where the calendar is. Nobody is grading you. In the app, a missed day resets your streak, but the next theme is waiting at midnight.
Can I do this challenge on my phone?
Yes. The Midnight Gallery is a free daily drawing app for iOS and Android with a new theme every day. You can also warm up right now in your browser with Draw Now: spin a random prompt and sketch it in 60 seconds.
Where can I share my October drawings?
Anywhere you like — and if you draw the daily theme in The Midnight Gallery, your sketch is published automatically to the community gallery at midnight.
Get a new theme every single day
The Midnight Gallery drops one drawing theme every day at midnight. One sketch, no undo, published to the community gallery — and a streak that keeps you coming back.
